Komachi Japanese Restaurant, Surry Hills

Japanese food isn’t really the first thing thing that comes to mind when thinking Surry Hills, it’s exactly what we’re here for on a chilly weeknight.

If you’ve ever been on Cleveland Street, you’ll probably have noticed Komachi Japanese Restaurant- the one with its front windows transformed into a wall of fame, featuring customers who have successfully completed their 1 kilo ramen challenge. There’s 34 on the wall so far, but we’re not quite brave enough to face the challenge- we’re here to try their normal menu thanks to Washoku Lovers.

Yasaka Ramen, Town Hall

I haven’t been doing many restaurant reviews lately and if I’m being honest, it’s because I’ve been really lazy with taking photos and write ups. But if there’s one thing that’s worth writing about it’s ramen- so when our latest ramen cravings kicked in and brought us to Yasaka Ramen, I made sure I lugged that camera along with me!

Ryo’s, Crows Nest

Some month and a half since returning home from holidays, and still suffering from mild post-Japan depression, I thought I’d treat myself to some ramen. Even if the recent 30 something degree heat was more a salad kind of weather.

I’d been meaning to try Ryo’s, having driven past the bright orange building and the long queues numerous times. It’s not exactly located in the most convenient place, but after driving around the block in circles for a while we eventually found street parking and breathed a sigh of relief when we saw that the queue wasn’t as long as we had expected.

Tenkomori Ramen House, Haymarket

Regent Place, or the Japanese alleyway on George street as I like to call it, seems to get busier and busier these days, with plenty of people lining up for fancy ice cream throughout the day and plenty more diners visiting for a quick ramen fix at Tenkomori….if they can first make it through the crowds at AquaS and Chanoma.

I’d visited Tenkomori on plenty of occasions previously though they were often at times when it was pretty quiet, so I was a little surprised at the line and lack of seating when I got there at 6pm on a weekday night. Luckily, the queue moved pretty quickly, and there was enough seating for everyone as people tend to come and go pretty quickly.

Ippudo, Central Park

With the recent hot weather, a ramen store would probably be one of the last places you’d expect to find me. But I’m not the only mad one- there’s plenty of diners also at Ippdo Ramen restaurant at Central Park!

I’ve heard many great things about Ippudo, especially when it just opened in Westfield’s Sydney just under two years ago. Much was said about the crazy long lines and the great ramen, and the one time I managed to make my way over to have a look, I was too hungry to wait in the line. The lines have died down by now, but they’ve also opened a second branch in Central Park which is much closer to uni for me!

So what’s the hype? I’m told that Ippudo’s noodles have won multiple awards in Japan, with its founder winning the title of ‘Ramen King’ after winning the ‘Ramen King Championship’- a Japanese TV show, similar to Iron Chef but for ramen only. Though I can’t say how the Australian version compares to the Japanese one, they do take their ramen very seriously, with their own noodle factory supplying the restaurants daily with freshly made noodles and gyoza. Fun fact: the thickness of their noodles are made depending on the temperature of the day!
